The members of who is now known as 'Phyllis' Kitchen', met in 1999, when the High Schools first colaborated. It was the first day of Grade 9 in which Dave met Paul and the two became friends right away. Dave introduced Paul to Gavin, who which played drums in a previous band with Dave name 'Esther's Basement', and Paul introduced them to Dave Richardson, who often played guitar with Paul for fun. The 4 immediately became friends and started to play music together in Paul's basement where the name Phyllis' Kitchen was born.
The name 'Phyllis' Kitchen' is named after Paul's mother Phyllis' Ryan. In the early days of practice she would always bring the band down cookies or would be in the kitchen baking or cooking. The band found this ironic and decided the name 'Phyllis' Kitchen' because of it.
Gavin, however left the band before they played any shows. The band then picked up Dennis Shelly, to play drums and Shawn Smith to play guitar. The band played their first show at the school during a lunch time concert. They then played again at a Christmas concert at Razoolies opening up for Mallczar. However, with the new members in the group their were also a lot of conflicts amongst the members. Because of the constant fighting the band split up after the show at Razoolies.
In April of 2000, Gavin returned to the band. The first show they played with Gavin in the band was as the opening act for Common Wealth Games which took place on July 1st, 2000. The band surprised many, were encored and had their pictures taken for the newspaper. This was the show where the band played their first original song 50 Cents.
The band then went on to play at a variety of different shows. In the spring of 2001 they travelled out to Cormack to record a demo CD with Wally Hall of WE Music Studios. Here they recorded their original songs '50 Cents' and 'Coldrain'. During the summer of 2001 they were accepted to play in the Provincial Battle of the Bands which was held here in Stephenville, Newfoundland.
In the Fall of 2001 the band decided to expand the band once again asking Chad Harnett to play guitars with them. There was no friction between any of the members with the addition of the new member and they got along like best friends.
It was also in the Fall of 2001 when the band started to record their first full length CD 'Surreal'. This was helped made possible by Chris MacDonald (a.k.a. Lord Garak).
During the cold winter months the band played in two Christmas variety shows and were invited to play on the local T.V. station.
Recently, in the past few weeks, Phyllis' Kitchen hosted their first head-liner show for the release of their album 'Surreal'. This took place at the Second Stage of the Arts & Culture Center. They hosted a full house and were very successful selling their CD.
